LASIK & You

Refractive Surgery Benefits

Imagine how your daily routine would change if you did not need glasses or contacts! Wouldn't it be nice to wake up and see the alarm clock without fumbling for glasses? You could enjoy the freedom to live a more active life of swimming, skiing or camping without the burden of contact lenses. You would be free from the worry of losing glasses or contacts in an emergency. Good vision without glasses may qualify you for a new job. Think of the possibilities! LASIK can help fulfill many dreams.

The excimer laser has an international track record of safety and effectiveness since 1987. Over four million procedures have been done. It is projected that this year over 2 million will be treated in the U.S. alone.

We have experienced a high degree of satisfaction in our LASIK patients. Over 95% of our patients can pass the drivers' test without glasses. About 5-10% of people may need an enhancement or touch up procedure to achieve their maximum result. Our goal is to give every patient 20/20 uncorrected vision, though there can be no guarantee. Our patients would have LASIK again, and 97% recommend it to their friends and relatives.

The benefits of LASIK can be dramatic, but with any surgical procedure, there is a small degree of risk for side effects or complications. Usually the side effects, such as fluctuating vision, dry eyes, glare and halos are mild and temporary. More serious problems such as infection and scarring are rare but exist with any medical procedure. Dr. Jacobs will personally discuss these with you prior to your procedure.Call for a free consultation.

LASIK Candidates

Your refractive error should be stable for 12-18 months. We prefer patients to be over age 18 for myopia and over 21 for hyperopia. There is no upper age limit. Eyes should be physically healthy and free of disease. Some medical conditions such as active rheumatoid arthritis or lupus may be contraindications. Women should not be pregnant or nursing. Correctable Ranges (Diopters): Myopia -1 to -10, Hyperopia +1 to +4, Astigmatism up to 4.

LASEK

LASEK, combining features of LASIK and PRK, may be a better choice for some patients. By avoiding the thick corneal flap, patients with thin corneas will be more stable, and dry eyes will be less likely to be exacerbated. Other potential flap problems are eliminated.
